Synth driven perpetual punk rock, darkened by atmospheric touches in its production and songwriting, yet uplifted by its intention to distill that darkness into light. Pop music from France on either side of the punk explosion has never shy’d away from electronic elements and on Nuits Blanche’s Helás LP there is plenty to remind us of that legacy. The sounds we are given rub against neither pop or dance, but instead absorbs the impact of quite tough sounding street punk. Four on the floor drums, like Disco’s ghost stamped across the face by the weight of the electric guitar run with songs not out of place if “A Country Fit For Heroes” got shoved inside the sleeve of “Wanna Buy A Bridge” and the two became one. Helás has the heft and the violence of boots treading across concrete en masse but within that is the lightness and the style of a dark smokey room filled with people wearing dark glasses and considering the inevitability of the pointlessness of existence…off the dance floor anyway. Altsaxofonist Lou Donaldson wurde schnell zu einer festen Größe des Blue-Note-Labels, nachdem er 1952
als Sideman an der Seite von Thelonious Monk und Milt Jackson zu hören gewesen war. Noch im selben
Jahr begann er, eigene Sessions als Bandleader einzuspielen und blickte, als er 1960 ins Van Gelder Studio zurückkehrte um sein hervorragendes Album ”Sunny Side Up” aufzunehmen, bereits auf ein Dutzend
Aufnahmesessions unter eigenem Namen zurück. In vielerlei Hinsicht ist das Album ein Paradebeispiel für
den typischen Blue-Note-Hard-Bop-Sound: eine Mischung aus swingenden Standards und bluesgetränkten
Eigenkompositionen, die von einem Quintett mit viel Gefühl und Ausdruck interpretiert werden.

Altsaxofonist Jackie McLean war 1959 bereits seit fast einem Jahrzehnt eine feste Größe der New Yorker
Jazzszene, als er für Blue Note als Bandleader aufzunehmen begann. Die gesamten 1950er-Jahre hindurch
hatte er sich an der Seite von Bebop-Legenden wie Miles Davis und Charles Mingus seine Sporen verdient.
Sein zweites Blue-Note-Album ”Swing, Swang, Swingin’” hält das schwungvolle Versprechen des Titels
voll und ganz ein. Mit Energie und Spielfreude führt McLean durch ein mitreißendes Programm. Als
einziger Bläser des Quartetts steht sein unverwechselbarer Sound ganz im Mittelpunkt: Sein markanter,
leicht herber Ton und sein ausgeprägtes Gespür für moderne Harmonik verleihen seinen leidenschaftlichen
Improvisationen eine besondere Strahlkraft. Neben Standards von Irving Berlin, Johnny Mercer oder Cole
Porter präsentiert McLean eine beschwingte Interpretation von Benny Golsons ”Stable Mates”, bevor das
Album mit seiner eigenen Blues-Komposition ”116th and Lenox” seinen Abschluss findet.

„Once Upon A Time“ ist ein Schlüsseldokument des britischen Modern Jazz um 1970. Alan Skidmore
stellte das Quintett für das Montreux Jazz Festival 1969 zusammen, wo es gleich drei Preise gewann –
darunter als beste Gruppe und Skidmore als bester Solist. Der Erfolg führte zur Zusammenarbeit mit
Deram-Produzent Peter Eden. Mit Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Harry Miller und Tony Oxley vereinte
Skidmore einige der später wichtigsten Stimmen des europäischen Jazz. Das 1969 aufgenommene und
1970 auf Deram Nova (SDN 11) erschienene Album verbindet Skidmores Coltrane-geprägtes Tenorspiel
mit Modal Jazz und freien Formen.

“High Spirits” zeigt eine ungewöhnliche, nicht minder faszinierende Seite des jamaikanisch-britischen Altsaxophonisten Joe Harriott, eines der großen Originale des britischen Jazz. Nach seinen bahnbrechenden
Free-Form-Experimenten widmete sich Harriott hier acht Songs aus dem gleichnamigen Musical von Hugh
Martin und Timothy Gray. Mit Shake Keane an Trompete und Flügelhorn, Coleridge Goode am Bass
und Bobby Orr am Schlagzeug ist Harriotts klassisches Quintett in Bestform zu hören. Aufgenommen
im September 1964 und 1965 als Teil der von Denis Preston betreuten Lansdowne Series veröffentlicht,
verbindet das Album melodische Zugänglichkeit mit souveränem Post-Bop und brillanten Improvisationen.

Auf den Alben der “Verve Remixed”-Reihe war Nina Simone stets die unbestrittene Favoritin. Jetzt wird
die “High Priestess of Soul” auf “Verve Remixed // Nina Simone” mit acht brandneuen Mixen gefeiert. Die
Gelegenheit zu dem Projekt ergab sich, als Verve Records Anfang 2026 die Feierlichkeiten zu seinem 70-
jährigen Jubiläum einläutete. Unter dem Titel “Year of Nina” begann man damit, jeden Monat einen brandneuen Remix eines Nina-Simone-Klassikers als digitale Single zu veröffentlichen. Das Echo der Musikfans
war überwältigend. Der universelle Appeal von Ninas Musik wird dadurch verdeutlicht, dass mit Solomun,
DESIREE, Supershy, Mochakk, HAAi, Austin Millz, Dublon und Antdot acht der derzeit angesagtesten
DJs, Remixer und Produzenten aus unter anderem den USA, Brasilien, Südafrika und Großbritannien für
das Projekt gewonnen werden konnten.

Jan Garbareks kraftvolles Doppelalbum Rites, auf dem der Meistersaxofonist von seinen langjährigen
Weggefährten Rainer Brüninghaus und Eberhard Weber sowie der Perkussionistin Marilyn Mazur und
dem Elektronikkünstler Bugge Wesseltoft begleitet wird, galt bei seiner ursprünglichen Veröffentlichung
1998 gleichermaßen als Magnum Opus und als eindrucksvolle Retrospektive der künstlerischen Bandbreite Garbareks. Auch heute noch überzeugt es als gelungenes Kompendium und als völlig eigenständiges,
modernes musikalisches Statement. Über die weit gespannte stilistische Landschaft des Albums verteilen
sich Bezüge zu den unterschiedlichsten Musikkulturen der Welt – von Norwegen bis Indien. Hinzu kommen
eine Vertonung eines Gedichts der indigenen Bevölkerung Nordamerikas für Stimmen und Saxofon sowie die
überraschende Fassung von Jansug Kakhidzes „The Moon Over Mtatsminda“, gesungen vom Komponisten
selbst gemeinsam mit dem Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra.

Orphée schildert einen Weg von der Dunkelheit ins Licht, inspiriert durch die verschiedenen Versionen des
antiken Orpheus-Mythos, von Ovid bis Cocteau. Die vielschichtige Erzählung über Tod, Wiedergeburt,
Wandel und die Kurzlebigkeit der Erinnerung lässt sich auch als Metapher für künstlerische Kreativität

DJ Old Rat is the moniker of Steve Barker, the legendary British broadcaster, music journalist, and host of the long-running On the Wire radio show on BBC Radio Lancashire.

Here he presents underground music from China 2002-2011, Between 2002 and 2011, Barker lived in China working on cultural projects for the British Council. During this decade, he produced and broadcast On The Wire directly from Beijing, embedding himself deeply into China's developing experimental and electronic underground music scen

Phoenix-based DJ and producer Paul West lands on eudemonia with a stellar 5-track EP, seamlessly picking up right where his impressive debut Blue Sun on Rocky Hill left off.

The record delivers a wonderful blend of breakbeats, house, electro, and Detroit techno, keeping the energy raw, warm, and deeply atmospheric throughout. CFUNK 050 is presented as a special collector edition commemorating the 50th Cyberfunk release. The package celebrates more than two decades of the label's music, artwork and visual identity.
The accompanying booklet brings together artwork from across the Cyberfunk catalogue, including labels from some of Quest's biggest and most memorable releases, alongside a personal retrospective from DJ Quest looking back at the creation of the label, the artists who shaped it and the journey back to vinyl.

Cyberfunk reaches release number 50. To mark the milestone, DJ Quest opens up the Cyberfunk archives for a special four-track vinyl release featuring new interpretations from Paket, Destroyers, Code BreakerZ and Groovebox.
CFUNK 050 connects the label's original UK Bassline Breaks foundations directly with a new generation of producers. Each artist has been given the freedom to reinterpret classic Quest material in their own style while retaining the character, bass pressure and dancefloor attitude that made the originals unmistakably Cyberfunk.
From Paket's reworking of Muffled Mayhem and Destroyers' take on Cybanet, through to two very different versions of Back To The Old Skool from Code Breakerz and Tech House maestro Groovebox, the release moves across modern breaks, heavyweight club production and rolling groove-led territory.
It is both a celebration of 50 Cyberfunk releases and a statement about what comes next.

Spanish breaks heavyweight Paket takes on Muffled Mayhem, retaining the attitude and personality of the original while rebuilding it for contemporary dancefloors with heavyweight drums, powerful bass and the polished low-end pressure that has made him a leading figure in the new generation of Andalusian Breakbeat.
A2. DJ Quest - Cybanet (Destroyers Remix)
Destroyers turns his attention to Cybanet, pushing one of Quest's darker electronic productions firmly into modern club territory. Futuristic electronics, heavyweight rhythm programming and serious dancefloor pressure meet the machine-driven character of the original.
B1. DJ Quest - Back To The Old Skool (Code BreakerZ Remix)
Code BreakerZ completely re-engineer one of Quest's defining tracks for a new generation. Their acid-tinged, hard-hitting approach injects fresh energy into Back To The Old Skool while keeping the hooks and attitude that made the original such an important Quest record.
B2. DJ Quest - Back To The Old Skool (Groovebox Remix)
Groovebox closes the release with a deeper, tech house, groove-led interpretation. Built around movement, rhythm and rolling dancefloor momentum, his remix takes the original somewhere different while preserving the unmistakable old-skool spirit at its core.

At the time of original release it was written that the album "will transport the listener to other plains of reality.” (Acid Test). Meanwhile, Alternative Press called it “alluring and addictive.” and CMJ called it "expansive, daydream enhancing music.”

The pair have also recently released their collaborative album with Optigan Conservatory, which can be revisited here. A beautiful and hermetic energy larger than the sum of its parts was captured in the collaborative process of making this album. There are echoes of the earliest releases from Windy & Carl as well as refractions of the same opacity that surfaced in the early kranky catalog.

Fourteen years have passed since Woollen Kits released two albums in a single year (Woollen Kits and Four Girls, both 2012), but Melbourne/Naarm’s beloved Kits are back to remind us what we’ve been missing all this time.

Weather the Storm still draws from the same deck of cards, but opens the door to some more classically renowned influences like The Velvet Underground, Television Personalities, Beat Happening ,Marine Girls, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, et al.

Across ten tracks it’s clear just how well they can write a hook, a verse, a chorus, a song; bringing together themes of everyday life, love and sincerity with aphorisms, stories and the classic sound we know and love.

Woollen Kits’ approach is almost as minimal and primitive as it was back in 2007, when singer/guitarist Tom Hardisty first sent a few channels into the red on an old Tascam tape machine. Simple chords, strong melodies, witty lyrics and a clear message. It’s a hell of a combination when it’s done well, and one they would only refine from there.

Tom (Hardisty) recruited a second Tom (Ridgewell, drums) and a Leon (Applebee, guitar) to help guide his new Cramps/Half Japanese- worship bedroom project into a real-life band, playing their first gig on NYE ’08 before launching into 2009 to record their first canon release, the Teenage Love 7”.

Yes, much time has passed since the band’s last record, Four Girls, came out in late 2012, but in the interim members have released plenty of other music across numerous projects, including Constant Mongrel, Nun, Canine Apathy, The UV Race, TB Ridge as The Director, Calamari Girls & more.

Three years after dropping Rapido Super studio on Hell Yeah, Caramel 3000 has slowed things down even further for his new eight-track LP, Super Tempra. This playful work gets stranger but even more inviting than ever with his signature OB-6 synth and the Eurorack modular, oodles of springy reverb, delayed balafon and scattered spoken-words. Caramel 3000 splits his time between the muddy waters of the Barene, south of the Venice Lagoon, and the dim light of a studio in Anderlecht. When not cruising in his sun-bleached wooden boat, he cherishes in the little light that reaches him at his shelter in Anderlecht. Renata and Piero, the couple on the artwork, once passed through that studio. This irregular sonic fusion of this EP came out of that visit. It's a fantastical collage that dissolves the boundaries between devotion and daydream with syrupy choir voices and fragments of Nancy Fraser lectures drifting in and out like the plot of a half- remembered hallucination. With his first longplay EUROSTAR, the Danish disco-dj-turned-rock-crooner Boogie Rookie seeks to bridge the troubled waters between UK new-wavey rock and sleazy euro-disco. It's a ten track italo-rock outburst uniting extreme hedonism, climate crisis and the European railnet.

The album is produced partly in Copenhagen with Danish disco royalty Vinnie Who and balearic-proghouse wunderkind William Winding, and partly on the hills of Napoli with the Neapolitan Italo-don Whodamanny. In the middle of the album there are steamy vocal features from the Parisian disco queen Corine and the Danish model-chanteuse Klara Kristin.

The album is already remixed by the likes of Prins Thomas, Italo Deviance and Danger Boys and has gained traction amongst DJ's all over who fear neither kitsch or raw rock'n'roll power.
